Para-Badminton Champion Nitesh Kumar Calls Out BAI for Neglect, Requests PCI Takeover
Nitesh Kumar, India's only Paralympics badminton gold medalist, has voiced frustration over the Badminton Association of India (BAI)'s alleged neglect of para-athletes. Despite returning with five medals from Paris (1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), Nitesh claims the association has failed to address their specific needs, including delays in visas, travel, and tournament entries. He accused BAI of ignoring para-shuttlers' achievements, stating that even basic necessities for athletes with disabilities, such as wheelchair accessibility and special equipment, were often unmet.
In a recent tweet, Nitesh urged BAI and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to hand over the management of para-badminton to the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). He noted that despite winning 21 medals at the Para Asian Games and several more at the Para World Championships, there was minimal recognition or support from BAI.
BAI responded, saying it is working on a plan for para-badminton's long-term growth and will address athletes' concerns directly. However, Nitesh remains skeptical, citing years of mismanagement that have left athletes feeling sidelined.
