Parasite by Bong Joon-ho is the first non-English language movie to win the Oscar for best picture and won three more oscars.
Parasite is a thriller, black comedy . It tries to show a class conflict through two families.
From a Marxist lens, a class conflict arises when the bourgeoisie dominates and asserts his power over thr proletariat which happens mainly due to the economic inequality.
The contrast between the Kim and the Park family is seen throughout the movie. The Park family being rich are in need of a tutor for their family. Ki-woo becomes the tutor of Da-hye by fooling her mother( Yeon-kyi) with a fake college certificate. Slowly, by scheming the Kim family enter the house. Ki-woo's sister becomes the art therapist of Da-hye's brother. Her husband (Park Dong-ik) is tricked into hiring Ki's father as his driver. Finally, Kim's mother becomes the house maid.
The Park family don't that all of their workers are a family .
The inequalities really begin to get exposed as the movie reaches its climax, when the Park family returns from a vacation, the Kim family partying have to hide to save their jobs and finally they manage to get out of the house. Then we see them run back to their small semi-basement house which is really far away and they have to go down a very high number of stairways to reach their locality. These stairways depict the socio-economic inequality between the families. For the Park family the rain meant that the sky got cleared of pollution but for the Kim family it meant a flood and their home destroyed.
The final nail in the coffin is when Park Dong-ik while trying to get the car keys covers his nose because of the 'smell' from Ki's mother, as he thinks these workers smell different from him, upon this Ki's father kills him and runs into the homes basement to hide.
In the end, we see Ki saving his father and climbing the social ladder but it is only a dream, thus the director' s way of telling us that the climb upwards in the social-economic ladder is impossible.
