Nicole Kidman is seen in many mediocre shows this year much to our surprise. Her role in Perfect Couple reinstates it. Netflix’s latest mini-series Perfect Couple is trash you would still watch till the end. Perfect Couple’s lenience to Big Little Lies is no secret. It also reminded me of Glass Onion and Knives Out (much better though). Look for those lazy, underwritten characters wandering on Nantucket Island. Its picturesque ambiance is the lead, and mystery surrounding the mansion of rich Winburys.
Nothing past Greer Garrison Winbury here. She is a famous crime author who wears that majestic aura of a rich lady with a rich husband and three obedient sons. Tag Winbury (Liev Schreibe), her husband keeps himself low. The plot is on with the big night before their second son Benji’s wedding with Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) a middle-class, unsuitable bride as it seems. The wedding crowd fills the mansion and the beach around. Yeah, the stage is all set for a mysterious death! Typical interrogation covers all six episodes. At the end of each, a new revelation, call it a twist if you wish to.
I couldn’t relate to the dead one’s unusual choice who believed sleeping with someone takes away the power and that ancient truth she was sentimental about. I liked Meghann Fahy’s (Merritt Monaco) stimulating presence on the Island as Amelia’s Maid of Honor. As cops say, Benji (Billy Howle) was slightly hard to read. Greer’s PR team does their PR stunts well. Ishaan Khatter as Shooter Dival is a lost kid in the entire plot. Eve is similar with more screen time.
Director Susanne Bier reserves that million-dollar secret buried by the Winbury family until the end. Why didn’t it wobble anyone? When a natural enters a family of fakes, things change. Open questions at the table disrupt the code of conduct. Perfect Couple nurtures such tropes in plenty. And Nicole Kidman is a royal presence throughout. If nothing else counts and nothing else to do, Perfect Couple is a popcorn watch for you.
