The case of the would-be assassin of former President Donald Trump, Thomas Matthew Crooks, has been a case that has perplexed investigators at every turn.

Presumably, a person who attempts to assassinate a political target would have some sort of trail of evidence of their political leanings. Maybe extreme posts about violence against their opposing party, maybe internet searches about their interests.

But in this case, there’s nothing. All we know is that the shooter of a Republican presidential candidate was a registered Republican who had conservative views in high school. His last internet searches before the Trump shooting was for pornography. He had photos of Trump, Biden, and Merrick Garland on his phone. And he was trying to self-diagnose himself for depression.

What it seems like this is turning into is less of an act of political violence and more a commentary on the mental health crisis in our country. From all the evidence gathered so far, it seems as though Crooks was just another mentally unstable person who, instead of seeking help like most school shooters and other mass shooters, sought violence as an out.

This is why we must invest more into mental health resources and that is why when police have people like this on their radar, they must take their guns away. If we had better mental health systems in place, Trump’s life would have never been at stake.
