Persephone and the Seasons
An interesting story in the Greek mythology about why seasons change. Persephone the goddess of flowers and daughter of Demeter, the goddess of harvest was abducted by Hades and taken to underworld as he was in love with her and made her his queen. Demeter however was not happy to be separated from her only daughter and vowed not to let any plant grow. Zeus had to persuade Hades to let her go but apparently Persephone had consumed a few pomegranate seeds in the underworld and according to the rule one cannot leave the underworld if the consume something there. Now some stories say Hades had tricked Persephone into eating the fruit while some say she knowingly ate that because she herself didn't want to part with Hades. Eventually a deal was struck and it was decided that Persephone would live with Demeter for six months and then with Hades. It is believed that the time Persephone spent with Demeter made her happy and thus led to spring and summer when all the plants grew and sprouted new leaves. Demeter gets unhappy and for the rest of the six months and thus it leads to fall and winter. Do you know any such stories?? Do share them.
