Devin Booker’s mid-range scoring ability has turned him into an All-Star attracting Chris Paul which has elevated the Pheonix Suns into title contenders. Before this season, Devin Booker’s only offensive weakness was his 3PT shooting specifically 3PT shoot off the dribble which affected him in Pheonix’s run to the Finals last year. The shot wouldn’t concern defenses as he shot 31% on dribble jumper 3’s in his first 6 seasons in the NBA which ranked 20th out of 22 qualifying players only above Russel Westbrook and Jordan Clarkson which is not good company. This season, Devin booker is shooting 40.2% on dribble jumper 3’s while attempting 3.2 of these shots per game which makes him 2nd best in the NBA for this shot only behind Mike Conley.
While this is a significant improvement, his 3.2 dribble jumper 3’s per game does not stack up against the high-volume guys such as Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, James Harden and Trae Young. While he shoots a high percentage of these shots, I believe Devin Booker should increase the volume of this shot to evaluate whether he can sustain his percentages. A decrease in mid-range shots and increase in his 3PT jumper could turn Devin Booker into a 25-28 PPG scorer almost overnight. However, this does not mean he must abandon the mid-range completely as this will always be an important facet of his game and the 3PT scoring would be an additional tool to add his already diverse offensive arsenal.
Booker has turned into an elite isolation scorer ranking 6th amongst players taking at least 3 isolations shots per game which bring him in the company of players like DeMar DeRozan, James Harden and Kevin Durant. In his last Playoff run, Devin Booker had multiple night where he scored more than 6 3-pointers, but he also had some game where his shot abandoned. This season he is back motivated more than ever and with the Pheonix Suns being arguably the best team in the NBA I have no doubt that Devin Booker will be the key to the Suns Playoff success.
