Most Elite PGs in the NBA were all at least borderline All-Stars by their 3rd season which is a great sign for Ja Morant. Morant is averaging 25.1 PPG, 5.7 REB, 6.7 AST on 49.2%-40%-76.6% shooting splits. Morant is only 6ft 3in and is somehow 3rd in the NBA in Points in the Paint per game with a FG% of 70.2%. His quickness with the ball combined with his handle helps him carve defenses and make his way to the paint. Morant’s athleticism allows him to out hang defenders in the air until he can find a clear opening to sink the basket. Morant’s passing acts as a fail-safe when his path to the rim is covered by a help defender. His hang time in the air allow him pass at the very last minute and still create good offense for his teammates.
The real game changer has been Ja Morant’s development as a 3PT shooter. His volume and accuracy have both increased by a respectable margin. Ja is attempting 4.4 3PA a game and making 40.4% of them. While the sample size is still relatively small to make absolute conclusions, Morant is still 22 with a lot of room to grow and I believe he will continue to work on this area as he progresses in his career. There have been only 8 3rd year PGs since the 1980s that have a OBPM (Offensive Box Plus/Minus) better than Ja Morant and some of those names are Chris Paul, Russel Westbrook, Magic Johnson & Mark Price.
However, not much has changed on defense with Ja Morant since his rookie year where he struggled navigating around screens and often does not show the same activity he shows on offense. He can read the passing lanes well enough, but his overall impact defensively still has a lot of room for improvement. Regardless, I see Ja Morant as an All-Star level player as of today and if he can polish his weaknesses, I see him having a great career ahead.
