Lukasz Skorupski is one of Poland’s three goalkeepers at Qatar 2022. He plays club football for Serie A side Bologna. This is his 5th season at the club. He was contracted to Roma for five years before that, although he played most of his football on loan at Empoli then. Skorupski started his career at Górnik Zabrze. His brother Michal also used to play professional football. Skorupski is one of eleven Serie A players in the Polish World Cup squad, the most of any league. Skorupski made his first national team appearance in 2012 in a 4-1 friendly win against Macedonia. His caps have been few and far in between, accumulating just eight starts in eleven years. In 2022, he has made three appearances, which is the most he has featured for the Polish national team in one year. Skorupski signed a contract extension at Bologna this summer in a deal that will keep him at the club till 2025 with the option of an additional year.
The question of starting goalkeeper has been raised in the Polish press. Wojciech Szczesny has been the unquestionable first choice for several years. However, the fact that Skorupski started in Poland’s sole friendly against Chile before the world cup has led to speculation about who might be between the sticks in Qatar. Skorupski had a fine performance in goal, keeping a clean sheet against the South Americans. Kamil Grabara is the third keeper in the camp; it is not expected that he might feature in the tournament.
