A century-old bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed on Sunday, killing 135 people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the area on Tuesday. The Prime Minister received a briefing about search and rescue efforts at the accident scene.
The Prime Minister arrived at the Morbi civil hospital where the victims are being treated soon after seeing the bridge. The survivors were observed being questioned by the prime minister about their condition.
A short while later, the prime minister presided over a high-level meeting to examine the situation and gave instructions that officials must maintain contact with the affected families and make sure they receive all available assistance. He added that a thorough investigation is urgently required, and the most important lessons learned from it must be put into practise as soon as possible.
According to the documents, the bridge was opened to the public five months earlier than expected. Before opening the bridge, The Oreva Group, the business that renovated it, did not request a fitness certificate from the local government.
