Polite Society: Big Trouble, Little Sister (2023)
A Review of the Movie as Available on Amazon Prime Video
Polite society is anything but socially polite. What I mean by that is that if you don't want your neighborhood aunty to have a heart attack listening to you watch such things, put on a set of headphones before you watch. Ria and Lena are first generation Pakistani immigrants to the United Kingdom. All is fun and fantastic in young Ria's life as both sisters choose unconventional careers to pursue whilst having each others' backs all the time. Trouble ensues when Lena decides to get married to Salim, a seeming decent chap, though his intentions maybe much more sinister than visible. (Or is it just Ria's fantasies speaking aloud??)
The movie is hilarious, poignant and has great action sequences all at once. The certain cues and bits that only a desi could catch up on are delightfully hilarious and Ria and Lena's bond is just absolutely beautiful. This movie is definitely one that is there for a good laugh, even if you aren't a South Asian. (We adopt on a conditional basis, two of which are to prepare rice well and can tolerate eating spice).
The movie is really great for its smaller budget but a kickass in a lehenga is way way too cool to mind the lower budget.
