Movimiento POP Venezuela launched the “POP Eco Art Recycling Contest 2021″ on May 17, 2021, as part of celebrating World Recycling Day. The aim of this contest was to encourage society to learn about garbage classification and take climate action. The contest also intended to develop youth climate leadership, create awareness about the importance of recycling, and promote responsible consumption. Nine of the best private schools from Venezuela and Colombia participated in the contest. As part of the contest, Movimiento POP Venezuela requested the participating schools to declare the week from May 10 to May 17 as “Recycling Week”, emphasizing on the Sustainable Development Goal of responsible production and consumption.
The contest encouraged students ranging from elementary school to high school to use their creativity and make handicraft projects with recycled materials. A total of 68 projects were submitted by the participating schools. These projects were evaluated on the basis of their originality, level of education, compliance with contest rules, design, difficulty level, curiosity, message and inspiration, and harmony and cleanliness.
The evaluation process had the support of a prestigious jury comprising of Arturo José Coronel, a Venezuelan plastic artist; Mirtha Becerro Hermozo, a plastic artist from Peru; and María Victoria Pérez, a plastic artist from Venezuela. The award ceremony for the winners took place on May 31, 2021.
