Had a lot of potential, disappointing
Portugal have suffered a major setback in their quest for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Diogo Jota is set to miss the flagship tournament after suffering a serious calf injury that is set to sideline him for months.
Jota started and played 89 minutes in the 1-0 win against Manchester City over the weekend. However, the forward was not able to complete the game as he suffered a calf injury in the dying minutes of the game. The forward was stretchered out and the consequences of the injury have now been brought to light.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had his say on the injury following the game. The German said, "It is a pretty serious injury of the calf muscle. Sad news for the boy, us, and Portugal. We passed each other after the game and he explained pretty much what had happened. I think he knew it was a serious one and could be pretty impactful for his World Cup dreams."
Jota himself took to social media after the game, confirming that the injury was quite serious. The forward is expected to be out of action until late December. This would certainly have a serious impact on Portugal's chances of lifting the World Cup trophy at the end of the year.
