Premier League midseason recap
World Cup fever had taken over the world but now that it is over, the club seasons resume. Let us take a quick recap of the Premier League season so far as it restarts.
Title race - Arsenal lead the race and are 5 points ahead of challengers Manchester City at this point. The Gunners have resisted Pep Guardiola's men impressively but will have to do even better if they are to win their first title in over a decade. They will also have to cope with the absence of Gabriel Jesus atleast for the time being as well.
Fight for Europe - Newcastle and Spurs occupy the final two UCL spots whereas United, Liverpool, Brighton and Chelsea follow in close pursuit. The Toons have been fantastic whereas the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are far off where they would want to be.
Relegation battle - Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham Forest occupy the relegation zone presently but the likes of Everton, West Ham, Leeds and Bournemouth could get pulled into the mire too.
Top scorer - City's Erling Haaland has 18 goals in 13 appearances, 6 more than anyone else. He has had a month off and is on track to smash all PL goalscoring records.
Most assists - Unsurprisingly it's Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne leading the assist charts again with 9. Given he has Haaland to supply to, it will be surprising if he's overtaken.
Breakthrough Young Player - Arsenal's William Saliba was already a known quantity but questions were raised whether he could cope with the PL. The Frenchman has come into his first Premier League season and has been the best defender in the league. No team has conceded less goals than Arsenal in the first half of the season. Southampton's Romeo Lavia also deserves a shout.
