Pride (2014)
A Review of the Movie as available on YouTube and the BBC Website
The movie Pride follows a group of gay and lesbian activists based in London that work together during Thatcherite era to provide funding and resources through crowdfunding efforts to Miners across the United Kingdom, choosing to concentrate their efforts on a small but welcoming village in South Wales. This leads to the birth of the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners or LGSM group, that provides their utmost effort to the common enemy of miners and the queer community, Margaret Thatcher and her government and administration.
The film is a dramatized biography of the actual LGSM group and how their efforts led to several major and distinct changes. It is a poignant retelling of the very real challenges of both the queer community as well as the miners, tracing their gradual warmth to each other's presence. The strength of the queer advocates in the face of adversity is absolutely fantastic to witness, and some of my favorite scenes in the movie include when the Welsh miner women visit London, the final march as well as when everyone sings Breads and Roses together.
The portrayal of all members of LGSM as well as members of the village is done relatively well, with the actors helping establish and run the story to be the most impactful. My favourite dialogue of the film remains "Where's my lesbians????" If you are looking for a queer watch this pride month, this is one movie I absolutely recommend watching.
Recommended or not: Absolutely Recommended (multiple watches too!)
