Pride Month 2023 is here and we are as happy as can be !!!!
Gay Pride, or rather LGBTQ+ pride events, such as pride parades and festivals, were started in significant urban areas to increase the visibility, acceptance, and legal protections for LGBTQ+ people living in those communities (though they used to be more inclusive). While the original purpose of Pride Day was political, it has evolved into a celebration of pride for the local LGBTQ+ community in many cities around the world thanks to widespread acceptance and legal protections.
History
Following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay pub on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, a group of LGBTQ+ people in New York City rioted in June of 1969. One of the most important events that contributed to the modern gay rights movement, this sequence of events served as a turning point for the LGBTQ+ community. To commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, organised protests were held in June of the following year in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The majority of cities around the world now hold their pride celebrations in the summer of the northern hemisphere, particularly in June, in memory of the Stonewall riots and the protests that took place the following year in major US cities. Even though some cities may hold their pride events on different dates, June is generally recognised as Pride Month.
The first LQBTQ Pride Parade in India was held in 1999 and was known as the "Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk"
Delhi hosted its first pride parade march in 2008, which served as a testament to spirit and resiliency. Since then each year members of the LGBTQ community organise a parade across the country to showcase their love for themselves against the heteronormative norms of society.
