Did you know that private neonatal nurses can earn upto 50000 RS per month but they will still have to bring their own plate and glass? A well-qualified, suitably experienced private nurse can certainly make it to the top, can definitely demand high wages, but they will still not be able to avoid facing untouchability.
For nurses belong to historically disadvantaged groups, work in private homes comes with additional baggage. Lectures on cleanliness will be given. Scheduled Caste nurses know enough to bring their own plate and glass, which they must eat out of before or after the family has eaten, and wash their utensils themselves. These nurses take care of all infant needs - feeding, burping, cleaning diaper, settling them, playing with them - but they are not allowed to demonstrate affection towards the children. This is a job that requires you to be at work 24x7, without hoping to even ask for leave at intervals.
Parenting is a hard and thankless job. It is also a skillful job that requires expertise. While we are ready to hire nurses at fat salaries to care for our children, we are reluctant to even accord them enough respect that they can sit and eat with us.
Is this what upward mobility for marginalised women feels like?
