● Avoid low chairs and sofas where you sink in and need help to get out off. When you go visiting family or friends look for a high seat where you can sit comfortably.
● Don’t be shy of using a walking stick. Choose one you are comfortable with.
Give a friendly neighbour your key for the front door so that he or she can enter if you are in distress. Keep your latest medical files handy and notify its location to at least one person who will help you.
Interlude 3: Putting It All Together
Inspiration stirs us into action.
The lives of the people we discussed are inspirational, isn’t it?
There are several more people around us whose lives make us sit up and take notice. These are not extraordinary people though their lives are praiseworthy. We can emulate them in our own unique way.
Putting it all together is about reflecting on all that goes into leading a graceful and fulfilling life, as we age post retirement; and making the inner determination to put into practice what we believe is good for us.
We adopt, evolve and adapt our approach to ageing successfully in our individual ways as we play out the grand drama of our lives.
All through this book I have spoken about my personal journey against each of the key considerations with an attempt to walk the talk. Many of you may have similar or more exciting journeys to talk about, my attempt is only to spur you on in every stage of the journey you are on.
I have found it useful to formally jot down what I wish to achieve every quarter. Not all of us like to do this. However, either way, do have a clear vision of what you wish to achieve and purposefully direct the drama of your life.
None of us wants to be a burden on our family, as we age.
