"Rafa and Bjorn Borg are the two grand masters of clay," Paul McNamee
Paul McNamee has named Rafael Nadal and Bjorn Borg as the two grand masters of clay. He believes that the two players have mastered the art of playing on the toughest surface in tennis. However, he believes that the next in line could be Carlos Alcaraz.
Rafael Nadal has won 14 French Open titles, whereas, Borg won 7 during his playing days. Although Carlos Alcaraz is yet to win a French Open title, yet there are signs that he could be as lethal as the duo on clay courts.
"Rafa and Bjorn Borg are the two grand masters, we can call them, of chess, because clay is chess at the end of the day. Hard court is draught, so they're different games. One is linear and one is angular. One has nuances, one does not. So, a clay court is a chess board," McNamee said.
"So, the grand masters are Rafael Nadal and Bjorn Borg. Next in line will be Carlos Alcaraz. It was almost a miracle he didn't win the French last year and he will win it this year unless something amazing happens. I mean, he's that good, this guy, on clay, right. This guy is the real deal," McNamee added.
