Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Bajrang Punia and other wrestlers in Haryana today amid row over the suspension of the newly-elected body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and protest.
During his visit to Virender Arya Akhara in Jhajjhar District, Haryana he engaged in discussions with wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia.
Beri MLA Raghbeer Khadayian was also accompanying Rahul Gandhi. Chhara is the hometown of wrestlers Deepak Punia and Bajrang Punia.
Notably, Wrestlers including Punia had voiced their disappointment over the appointment of Sanjay Singh, a Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's ally as the new president of WFI after his panel comfortably won most of the posts in the delayed polls.
It's noteworthy here that the Sports Ministry suspended the WFI for 'complete disregard for the existing rules and regulations'. The decision came after the newly elected WFI President Sanjay Singh announced that U-15 and U-20 nationals for wrestling will take place at Nandini Nagar, UP's Gonda before the end of this year. As per the ministry, the decision was against the provisions of the constitution of WFI as it was taken without giving sufficient notice to the wrestlers who would take part in the nationals.
