Remembering the late West Indies batsman Basil Butcher on his 91st birth anniversary. He made his Test debut against India in 1958, scoring 28 and an unbeaten 64. He scored another half century during the second Test, and it was during the third Test that he made his maiden Test century, scoring 103 runs in a game West Indies went on to win by an innings and 336 runs. He didn't stop there, as he made another century in the very next game and eventually finished the series with 486 runs at an average of 69.43, which included 2 centuries and 3 half centuries.
His highest Test score of 209 (unbeaten) came during the 3rd Test against England in 1966, which was played at Trent Bridge. West Indies went on to win the game by 139 runs. Butcher scored 3109 runs at an average of 43.11 during his career, including seven centuries. In addition, he took 5 wickets during his career, and all those 5 wickets were taken during one single innings where he picked up 5 for 34 against England in 1968. In 2019, Butcher passed away at the age of 86 in the USA after battling with a long-term illness.
