Rene Higuita who invented scorpion kick
Retired Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita is credited with inventing the scorpion kick- a skill which he performed while clearing a cross from Jamie Redknapp during a friendly against England at Wembley Stadium on 6 September 1995.
He was also skilled at taking free kicks and penalties and is one of the highest-scoring goalkeepers with 41 goals.
Nicknamed "El Loco" (Mad Man), Higuita was known for his dramatic flair, and eccentric playing style, often taking risks and actively coming out of the penalty box to take on opponents, play the ball out to defenders, undertake individual dribbling runs, and attempt to score goals, which led him to be described as a 'sweeper-keeper.'
However, he ran out of luck during the 1990 FIFA World Cup round of 16 match between Colombia and Cameroon, when he attempted to dribble past Cameroonian striker Roger Milla.
Milla dispossessed him and scored, as Cameroon went on to win the game 2-1 in extra time- and Colombia was knocked out of the competition.
Since his retirement, Higuita has served as the goalkeeper coach of Real Valladolid, AL Nassr FC and Atletico Nacional. He has also expressed his wish to coach the Colombian national team someday.
