Repolling is currently ongoing at 11 polling booths in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency following the Election Commission's declaration of Friday's voting, the first phase of elections, as null and void due to incidents of violence, including gunfire and clashes.
The chief electoral officer announced the repolling for April 22, citing the need to ensure fair and peaceful elections.
The affected polling stations where repolling is underway include Moirangkampu Sajeb and Thongam Leikai in Khurai constituency, four in Kshetrigao, one in Thongju in Imphal East district, and three in Uripok and one in Konthoujam in Imphal West district.
By Friday's polling in Manipur witnessed several violent incidents, including gunfire, clashes, intimidation, and destruction of electronic voting machines (EVMs). The turnout for the two Lok Sabha constituencies - Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur - was recorded at 72 percent despite the disturbances.
Earlier, the Congress party demanded repolling in 47 polling stations, alleging booth capturing and election rigging. Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, seeking repoll in 36 polling stations in the Inner Manipur constituency and 11 in the Outer Manipur constituency.
The Election Commission of India approved the re-polling at 11 polling stations across five assembly constituencies of the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
