Responsible AI in warfare: FOUR points to ponder as Seoul global summit begins.
1. AI has the potential to significantly benefit the armed forces, but it also carries risks. It can help commanders to analyze complex data, enhance decision-making, increase effectiveness of operations that could reduce collateral damage.
2. But the opposite scenario too is possible. In the absence of proper training and monitoring, AI systems could spell more trouble. Biased training and inadequate human oversight might result in poor decisions, causing unnecessary destruction and avoidable suffering.
3. Given the increasing adoption of AI by militaries--- as reports suggest from Gaza to Ukraine-- it is essential to form binding guidelines for the responsible use of military AI in line with international law.
4. The summit on Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain (REAIM) 2024 in Seoul builds on the inaugural REAIM summit of 2023, which aimed to raise political awareness and advance international agreements on the use of military AI. Since the 2023 summit, the Global Commission on REAIM—a group of leading AI scholars—has been established to promote global norms and policy coherence for military AI. Additionally, regional follow-up meetings have been held across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
