Where to start with a review of this show. First, thanks to FX for having the guts to bring a show like this forward. Kudos to the show runners for their vision for the direction of the show, the handling of the show's first season (and hopefully many more), and then getting out of the way to let the actors perform.
A show succeeds when the chemistry is there from the very beginning. That was evident in the first episode, amidst the chaos of a kitchen on the edge of total disarray, the driving force of one chef with a vision is evident. The first 2-3 episodes, were intriguing...head scratching...darkly humourous...and draws the viewer in.
Jeremy Allen White's talent is not yet fully realised. He is an acting force to be reckoned with. First in "Shameless" and now in "The Bear", his talent, his passion, his emotions, come through from the opening scene to the last shot of the season. In particular, the soliloquy he delivered in the support group scene is a master class in self discovery, grief, and pain and is brought forth by the actor because of his extraordinary ability to relate to the character he is playing.
I am old enough to remember a similar talent who, for me, immediately came to mind after watching both "Shameless" and even more so with "The Bear". He is reminiscent of James Dean in his intensity, his skill and his complete control of his acting.
The supporting cast is equally up to the task of making this show work. From the featured actors to the guest appearances, the casting is right on the mark. Their chemistry is evident from the very beginning and continues throughout the first season.
I can't wait to see the arc that this show takes over the seasons that are ahead. I have no doubt that this show will continue to grow and become the cult favourite that is it's destiny.
