Arsenal won the FA Cup to complete the double, capturing the league championship for the first time in team history.
Arsene Wenger led Arsenal to their first Premier League victory and their first league championship since 1991 in his first full season as manager. By ending the season one point ahead of Manchester United, Arsenal dethroned them from first place for just the second time in Premier League history.
For Wenger, winning the league appeared improbable before Christmas, but a run of 45 points out of a possible 51 between 26 December 1997 and 3 May 1998 propelled them to the crown.
Club captain Tony Adams scored the winning goal in Arsenal's 4-0 victory over Everton at Highbury after rushing on to a through pass from fellow center-back Steve Bould. Despite losing their last two games, United was only able to close the gap on Arsenal to one point, allowing Wenger to become the first foreign manager to win the Premier League championship.
With the arrivals of Marc Overmars from Ajax and Monaco trio Emmanuel Petit, Christopher Wreh, and Gilles Grimandi, Wenger had prepared for his successful title push. Tottenham Hotspur's Teddy Sheringham, who missed a penalty on his debut at White Hart Lane in a 2-0 victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's team, filled the vacuum left by Man Utd star Eric Cantona, who retired that summer.
Following the departures of Les Ferdinand and David Ginola, both to Spurs, Newcastle United struggled to repeat their second-place results of the previous two seasons and ended 13th under Kenny Dalglish.
Blackburn Rovers, the team Dalglish won the Premier League championship in 1995, got out to a quick start, winning four of their first five games under Roy Hodgson. However, they lost the top place after an exciting 4-3 loss to Leeds United.
