If Telengana agitation was the first spark of his political awakening, Emergency reaffirmed his calling. Yechury was among the most visible faces of student politics of resistance.
He along with Prakash Karat laid the foundation of Jawaharlal Nehru University being a left bastion of student politics. A topper from Dellh"s Stephens college made JNU his political turf and there was no turning back since then.
He walked into many party organisations that was made of Bengalis and Malayaleees and became either of them or better than them depending on how one sees it.
Behind his suave veneer, his ideological conviction was deep-rooted. But he rose to the polical occasion, defying the hardliners in the party who often missed sands getting washed away under their feet.
At the same time he was rooted to the convictions of a communist at any cost. Though he became party secretary pretty late perhaps, and that too when the CPI(M) was past it's glory, Sitaram Yechury was a comrade none could ignore on any count. He was the endearing leader of the polical left, economical left, civil society left and more.
Those who chose to ignore Yechury's practical wisdom, including those in his party did so in their own peril.
He was one of the brightest stars of Indian political firmament and will remain so for ever.
Rest in Peace, comrade, leaders like you are rarest to find.
