It's a poorly made gorefest
The headline basically encapsulates what this movie is; a horrible misfire and a total shitstorm. All bark and no bite, Salaar for all its great production, high ambitions, sets, unique concepts, and over- the- top macho violence is just boring. From the very start Salaar does a good job at piquing one's interest but after that deteriorates completely into something totally meaningless. Hell, the first half of this film is so boring and devoid of substance that you'll only be left scratching your head in total confusion. In the second half the story kicks the pace and we dive deeper into the story and concept of Khansaar; a hidden city of dacoits, murderers, rapists, slavers and every other sort of criminal. The city even has its own political system, a constitution, and a powerful army which separates it from the rest of India. A unique concept, the film falls short on its ambitions with its pathetic storytelling, direction, and horrible pacing. This film is already 3hrs long and feels like a whole day. On the positive side Salaar has great production, VFX, cinematography, music, acting. Even the concept and story are praiseworthy. Indeed, the film does justice to its budget though that is where the praise ends. Much of this film features a bunch of senseless graphic violence which serves little purpose apart from highlighting how much of a badass the protagonist is. The choppy editing, constant frame changes serve only to induce boredom and a fucking migraine. Violence, sex, music are all tools meant serve a function; aka add to the story, scene, and the characters. But here it serves little purpose as the action here is just muscle flexing. I had great expectations from the film, and its aesthetic, tone, and bleak colours added to that but what it ultimately boiled down to was 3hrs of wasted time and money. A total misfire, do yourself a favour and avoid this pile of streaming shit completely.
