Coaching throughout the NBA has been solid as a whole during the first full month of the 2021-22 season, but that doesn't mean every coach is doing a great job.
Coaching can be hard to judge.
This early in the season, there are teams with both a positive point differential and a losing record, or vice versa. To put it bluntly: some teams are just really bad and not built to win. For those coaches, success is defined as keeping the team competitive—even if winning never really enters the equation.
Other teams are trying to move up a level, and a small tweak here or there can make the difference. There are also contenders refining their identity en route to the playoffs, rounding out the entire group of 30 franchises.
Nate McMillan, Atlanta Hawks
After taking over for Lloyd Pierce midseason, Nate McMillan guided the Hawks to a 27-11 record and a surprising Eastern Conference Finals run last year. The success of the previous season has not carried over.
Atlanta is off to a slow 5-9 start, even though it has enjoyed good health and brought back essentially the same roster as last year. The Hawks had an offensive rating of 115.9 last year after McMillan took over. This season that number had dropped to 107.9 entering Sunday.
McMillan has a problem most coaches would die for—too much talent. The Hawks are one of the deepest teams, but being that deep means figuring out who to play, when and for how long. That was not an issue last season with injuries.
Kevin Huerter, Danilo Gallinari and Cam Reddish have seen their minutes go down this season. McMillan needs to establish a rotation to help get the Hawks back on track.
Ime Udoka, Boston Celtics
Ime Udoka was one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel last season. Landing his first head coaching job in Boston caused a lot of excitement. A 2-5 start muted that exuberance almost immediately.
The defense was a big concern in those first seven games.
