The Amazons, a race of female warriors who’s powerful and fearsome queen was always the last boss the Greek heroes such as Hercules and Theseus had to defeat were considered to be hardcore feminists, delinquent mothers and a bunch of man haters by the Greeks. Though the Amazons are not real, they were based on real life warrior women from the tribes of Scythia.

The Scythian women were trained in the art of horse riding, archery and how to handle a spear while they are young. The women warriors who died in the battle field were given a proper warrior’s burial like their male counterparts. They were buried along with their bows and quivers. They also had war injuries similar to men and this made many archaeologists confused about the gender of the skeletal remains found in parts where the Scythian tribes thrived. Had it not been for DNA tests they would still have assumed that they were men.

The women also used to tattoo their body and for them each tattoo told a particular story. They also practiced fosterage, a system where they gave their sons to their neighboring tribes. This practice also helped establish better relationship between two tribes and fosterage was a common practice that was practiced among many nomadic tribes. Philip the Great was raised by an ally of his father. The Scythian women also taught the Thracian women the art of tattooing. The Greeks were both appalled and fascinated by these strong independent women who were different from their own wives and daughters.

The Amazons stand as a sort of proof that equality has always been there within us and this blazing spirit which has been suppressed for so long has returned and hopefully one day, we can achieve true equality between all of us.
