Serbia, for many, were the dark horses of the World Cup. Due to the sheer talent in their squad, there was belief that they could upset the odds. But they, like fellow dark horses Denmark, have finished without a win and are going out.
If anything, it shows how unpredictability international football is - much more so that club football. And this World Cup's peculiar timing means games have come thick and fast, making them more frantic, frenetic and unpredictable.
Injuries had a part to play in Serbia's struggles but manager Dragan Stojković could never really decide which playing style to use and the team lacked pace, especially in the absence of Filip Kostic against Brazil. And like Denmark, a lot of their players looked tired and it may become a theme for other teams as the tournament wears on.
