Recent reports from International News highlight a notable change in Pakistan's coal import dynamics. Afghanistan's coal exports to Pakistan have decreased in recent months, leading to a surge in imports from South Africa. Official statistics from the Pakistan International Bulk Terminal Limited (PIBTL) indicate a substantial increase in coal imports from various countries, reaching 493,000 tonnes in the first 16 days of 2024.
Despite the Taliban's previous commitment to boost Afghanistan's coal extraction for meeting a portion of Pakistan's coal needs, the actual trade scenario has evolved differently. The reduced import of Afghan coal is a key factor contributing to the overall rise in Pakistan's coal imports. Another significant element is the favorable pricing of coal from South Africa's Richard Bay coal terminal. With a drop in prices from USD 116 to USD 98 per tonne, South African coal has become a more attractive option, leading to a 25 percent price difference compared to Afghan coal.
