It’s easy to see why many Arsenal fans would happily sacrifice their European adventure this season. Whilst in previous seasons Arsenal have been desperate to end their European trophy drought, the trophy itself was arguably second in priority to the Champions League place that comes with it.
This season though, barring a colossal collapse in form, Arsenal are certain to be playing Champions League football this season, and so a Europa League win doesn’t feel quite as significant. After all, before the UCL qualification was added as an incentive, there was not much interest in the former UEFA Cup and it was not treated as a major prize.
If any Arsenal fan had the choice between a Premier League title and a Europa League win, I’m sure the voting would fall almost unanimously in favour of domestic success, but does this mean Arsenal shouldn’t give 100% on all fronts?
Even if Arsenal are eliminated on Thursday night the title race will still likely go down to the wire, and it may be underwhelming should the club go trophy-less after such a strong campaign. Not to mention the fact Arsenal do not have a rich history of European silverware, and the experience would surely serve them well on their return to Europe’s premier competition.
With this in mind, I think it would be foolish for Arsenal not to pursue both prizes with equal vigour. A Europa League win in what fans hope will be their last campaign for a while would be an excellent sign-off, and a potential double is nothing to be sniffed at. Arsenal must get used to fighting on multiple fronts or Champions League qualification is futile, and thanks to their January additions they are well-equipped to do so.
A final consideration is momentum. Winning breeds more wins and it’s important for Arsenal to keep momentum to avoid their levels dropping in league matches. The positivity and belief a strong European campaign would bring could well counter the accompanying fatigue as well as taking some pressure off that would come with only one remaining target.
I say go for European glory.
