According to a government assessment, Canberra should think about expanding Australia's groundbreaking rule requiring Big Tech to pay for journalism to social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter.
Al Jazeera reported that last year, Canberra passed ground-breaking laws requiring Google and Facebook to reach agreements paying media organisations for news material on their platforms or allow a government-appointed arbitrator to determine how much they should pay.
Australia's Treasury stated in a report released on Thursday that media organisations had signed more than 30 agreements compensating them for news shared on Google and Facebook during the bargaining code's first year of operation.
“On the evidence available to the review, at least some of these agreements have enabled news businesses to, in particular, employ additional journalists and make other valuable investments to assist their operations,” the report said.
“While views on the success or otherwise of the Code will invariably differ, we consider it is reasonable to conclude that the Code has been a success to date.”
