Though a bit clunky and lacking by today’s standards, Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in horror games even today, having set the foundation for creating horror survival games, much like Resident Evil and Dead Space. It still looks and sounds magnificent, original and fresh while also creeping you out, and Konami seems to be doing a good job upgrading it.
To keep the hype train rolling, Konami have released a bunch of screenshots, and so far they look really cool. One of Silent Hill 2's iconic images is James Sunderland, bathed in shadow, looking at his reflection in a dirty, dark, bathroom mirror. The use of the shadows and overall grey texture is slightly toned down compared to the original though it adds a more ominous vibe to it somehow. The new character model is certainly impressive although a remaster would have been enough rather than making him look like an almost complete different person.
Bloober Team certainly know how to make a game look attractive, and the design of the Pyramid Head who hunts James throughout the game is certainly brilliant. More polished and refined than before, the details are all on point, including the pyramid shaped mask, the latex gloves, and the executioner clothes with the rain adding an interesting vibe. Some might be thrown off by the more refined design instead of the more creepy and unrefined design of the original, but the polish here adds a more artsy feel to this already ominous, dark, mysterious and haunting entity.
The town of Silent Hill looks great, wandering through the same old ethereal foggy streets of this nightmarish place is a joy, this time powered by Unreal Engine 5 of all things! The fog, an important aspect of the game appears thick, dense, nightmarish and alive ready to capture you forever.
Overall, there seems to be a lot of work being put into The Silent Hill 2 remake and while the highly pristine and glossy design is a bit of a turn off instead of the muddy and unrefined design of the original, the design here also looks artsier, weirder creepier and more alive than before.
