Slipknot is far better than I thought
Yeah, the title reflects it all. My opinion on Slipknot has drastically improved since my initial introduction to them. I heard them back in school and dismissed them as a very average band, given that almost every single song they do sounds the same. Funny enough, that is still my biggest problem with them. And also their fandom. But after listening to their discography with full attention, my opinion has changed.
While they may have come from the hipster style nu metal scene in the ‘90s, except for their debut I never once thought they were part of that genre. They sound nothing like Limp Bizkit, or Korn. I always thought they were your average day metal band who I couldn’t give a shit about.
But boy I was wrong. Yes, they are an average band but also much better than your average brutal slam death metal. Their musicianship is quite experimental and while they retain their sound, much like Tool they have evolved a lot over the years. And the change from their debut is impressive!
I care nothing for their getup and antics though I’m sure they put on one hell of a show. But funny enough, Slipknot is also possibly the most incompetent metal band ever because it has nine fucking people! You could have gotten away with just six, it’s like there are three douchebags just to fill the stage!
The end result is like a mixture of heavy metal, groove metal, thrash metal, death metal, industrial music, gangster hip hop, and metalcore! It is generic, yet quite unique because no sounds like them.
Simple and fun, despite hearing far more diverse and technical stuff, Slipknot has earned my respect because they are it’s just a good time, and sometimes that’s all you need.
My rating for all their albums from worst to best.
