New person: Hi, I’m . Nice to meet you. Me: I’m Richa. Nice to meet you, too. New person: So, Richa, what do you do (for work)? That happens to be the beginning (and end) of every conversation with every person I have met and am yet to meet in a social setting. In the post-industrial age of automation, my worth is measured by the quality of work that I do and the ‘value’ that I add. As a woman, my pride stems from no longer needing to be introduced as a wife/mother/daughter/sister. In this series of posts called ‘I am not what I do’, I explore why this transition may not be as liberating as it sounds, the ways in which work identity has become the newest (and oldest) form of social discrimination, and what may be an effective alternative to social introductions. Stay tuned for posts on career choices, working from home, social anxiety, identity as a writer, and much more.
