Sourav Ganguly helped Bengali nationalism more than Indian cricket.
Ganguly, unlike Kapil Dev, never had to deal with a mediocre team and lead from the front.
He played in an era which had some of the greats of the Indian cricket team playing at their peak. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble and more.
Ganguly was not even a decent bat, barring his offside shots. His feet movement was as restricted as a heavy truck that got stuck in marsh lands, whirring it's engine to get out to a decent tarmac.
That said I admit to a non cricketing reason for his stature.
That is his contribution to reviving Bengali pride is immeasurable. After Netaji and Satyajit Ray, Bengal was in need of a hero in the age of their dim witted cricketers such as Saba Karim.
Ganguly fit the bill. So the prince of Kolkata was born and crowned. Then he comparing him with a legend like Kapil Dev brings more shame to Ganguly than to anyone else.
