The upcoming month for Spurs and their manager Ange Postecoglou could be a season-defining one as they will need to replace talismanic skipper Son Heung-min, who departs to represent South Korea in the upcoming AFC Asia Cup tournament in Qatar.
While he has relished the prospect of taking over the armband after previous skipper Harry Kane took his talents to Bavaria, the problem that his absence brings is that who will be his successor for the next month.
This was the year that saw Spurs finally move on from the old leadership group that they had. Kane and Lloris went out of the club, while Eric Dier and Hojbjerg are reduced to back-ups.
The new leadership group in the side sees Son finally take the armband, with Cristian Romero and James Maddison being announced as his deputies.
Now if we go by the actual level of hierarchy, it is a no-brainer that while Son will be away, the responsibility of leading the side will fall to either one of the two vice-captains.
Except... Both the vice-captains are currently out injured. While Maddison is still nowhere close to resuming training, Romero is also expected to miss the entire month of January.
So now not only does Postecoglou have to find a way to replace the goalscoring threat that his Asia Cup-bound provided, he also has to find new leaders amid this leadership vacuum.
So what do Spurs do? While Ben Davies has been the stand-in skipper and had done a commendable job, he will find himself on the periphery once all the injured players return to full fitness.
A couple of names of course have been floated around. New boy Guglielmo Vicario is touted to be the front runner for the armband. While he's become a key member of this side with some match-winning performances, his ability to fluently speak English holds him in very good stead. Destiny Udogie and Dejan Kulusevski are the other names in the fray.
These new names are a clear sign that Spurs are moving from the old guard to the new. And that is a very exciting prospect.
