Sri Lanka set a formidable target of 292 runs following their decision to bat first against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2023 Group B clash on Tuesday at the Gaddafi Stadium. Batting across their quota of 50 overs, Sri Lanka finished with a score of 291-8. Kusal Mendis emerged as extremely instrumental in setting up this target, contributing 92 runs in 84 balls, with a series of six fours and three sixes. However, fortune did not favour Mendis, who fell short of a well-deserved century following a run-out.
Sri Lanka’s opening duo Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne provided a promising start to the game, scoring a partnership of 63 runs in just 10.2 overs. However, this formidable facade did not last long as they were unable to sustain the momentum and were dismissed for 41 and 32 runs, respectively. In addition to this, Charith Asalanka contributed a respectable 36 runs in 43 balls.
The tail-enders Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana added 64 runs in 63 balls for the eighth wicket, providing a valuable boost towards the end of the innings. Seamer Gulbadin Naib was the most successful among Afghanistan’s bowlers, claiming 4 wickets for 60 runs in his stipulated 10 overs. In addition, Rashid Khan showcased his bowling prowess by clinching 2-63 during the contest.
Both teams retained their initial eleven players for this crucial contest. With an impressive performance against Bangladesh, where they emerged victorious by five wickets, Sri Lanka is all but guaranteed a spot in the next round of the Asia Cup 2023. However, Sri Lanka’s chance to progress to the Super 4 round is likely to be threatened if Afghanistan defeats them by a large margin. If Afghanistan manages to chase the target in 37.1 overs or less, they might seize Sri Lanka’s spot in the next round. Bangladesh has already secured their place in the Super 4 round, despite suffering a loss against Sri Lanka in their opening match.
