Sunscreens protect us from harmful UV rays which can cause skin damage, a tan and potentially lead to cancer in the long run! There are two types of sunscreen filters - Chemical or Organic filters and Physical or Mineral filters.
Mineral filters like Titanium dioxide and Zinc Oxide are now preferred over chemical sunscreens due to safety concerns and environmental awareness. Mineral sunscreens works by reflecting and scattering UV light, in much the same way as clothing, while chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert it into heat energy.
Both mineral and chemical sunscreens help in filtering out harmful UV rays.
So what's the issue?
In recent years, chemical filters have come under fire for their negative effects on health and environment. They can act as endocrine disruptors and many of them are known to cause harm to coral reefs. Avoid them.
So what should we use?
Stick to the mineral blockers. There are only two you need to remember - Titanium dioxide and Zinc Oxide. That's it!
Just one more thing - To ensure maximum safety, avoid sunscreens with nano particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
