Switzerland has been announced as the host country for the 2025 Women's European Championship, following England's hosting and win in 2022. Despite failing to make it out of their group in the previous tournament, Switzerland will qualify automatically as hosts for the upcoming championship.
UEFA chose Switzerland over bids from France, Poland, and a joint bid from Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Ukraine also expressed interest in hosting the event, but due to the Russian invasion, their bid was not considered. The tournament will take place over four weeks in June and July 2025 across eight cities, including Basel, Bern, Geneva, and Zurich.
The 2022 Women's Euros broke attendance records, with over half a million spectators attending the tournament, and the final between England and Germany drew in a record-breaking audience of 87,192 people at Wembley. The tournament was also watched by a peak audience of 17.4 million on BBC One, making it the most-watched women's football game on UK television. The global audience for the tournament exceeded 365 million people, highlighting the growing popularity of women's football around the world.
Swiss Football Association President, Dominique Blanc, described the decision to host the tournament as a "historic day" for the country and women's football. The tournament will shape the development of women's football at all levels, and the qualification process for other nations will begin in the spring of 2024.
With a huge amount of viewership and Switzerland set to host the Cup, it will be an important step towards the continued growth and development of women's football worldwide. Switzerland will be immensely proud over this provision. Swiss Football Circuit will try to grab this huge opportunity to develop and strengthen.
