Our bodies are well equipped to handle stress in small doses, but when that stress becomes chronic, it can negatively manifest in our body, on our moods and in our behaviour There are many healthy & unhealthy ways of managing stress. Some unhealthy methods include, smoking, consuming sugary foods, oversleeping etc. which may feel relaxing at first but have a detrimental effect in the long run.
Endocrine System - Your pituitary and adrenal glands respond to your brain's request to increase or decrease your hormone production. Higher levels of stress means higher levels of stress hormone - cortisol.
Muscular System - Stress hormones cause your muscles to tense up. Being stressed often can lead to muscle tension, headaches, migraines, muscle aches and cramps.
Nervous System - Stress can lead to increased heart rate and sweat, which indicates that your body is preparing for a fight or flight response.
Skeletal System - When stressed, nutrients from your bones can be redirected to other areas that require urgent action. In the long run, it can lead to balance issues and increased risk of an injury.
Digestive System - Stress can cause increased cortisol level which in turn can affect your microbiome. This means that good bacteria won't survive, even if you're taking your probiotics.
Reproductive System - Chronic stress can lead to a drop in sex drive & fertility for both genders. For women, high levels of stress may be associated with irregular menstrual cycles or painful periods.
