Sources revealed on Monday that eight young women, detained last week in the Barchi district, west of Kabul, have yet to be released. The Taliban reportedly took these women on Thursday, the fourth of Delawar, from the Mahdiyeh neighborhood in the 18th district of Kabul.
Efforts by the families of these women to secure their release have, so far, been unsuccessful. Local residents report that Taliban members, in recent days, have continued detaining young girls and women in western Kabul. The extensive campaign by the Taliban, under the pretext of enforcing modest dress codes, has created an atmosphere of "fear and terror" in the region.
While the Taliban has not officially commented on the detention of these young women, their spokespeople previously stated that women not complying with the group's dress code would face temporary imprisonment and release upon compliance. Despite this, Kabul residents assert that the Taliban has intensified arrests of women and girls in recent weeks, focusing on the issue of "hijab."
In the midst of these developments, Afghanistan International has recently released numerous videos documenting the violent detention of women in various neighborhoods of Kabul. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reports that "local authorities have largely targeted women and girls, primarily in western Kabul/Barchi, a Hazara-inhabited area, and some in Khairkhana, primarily inhabited by Tajiks from Panjshir."
