After a despair we witnessed on November 19, 2023, the Indian team healed 1.4. billion hearts by clinching the major silverware at the recent T20 World Cup 2024.
And with Gautam Gambhir becoming the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, Shreyas Iyer likely to return in ODI Series vs Sri Lanka!
There is nothing surprising about that, as Iyer's numbers speak for themselves. In the 2023 World Cup, he was India's third-highest run-scorer, amassing 530 runs at a great average of 66.25. What set him apart was his staggering strike rate of 113.24, often dictating terms in last 10 overs. This consistency extends beyond the World Cup. In 2022 and 2023, he was the third-highest scorer for India in ODIs, with him hammering 1570 runs at an average of almost 55. This showcased his ability to perform consistently.
Also Iyer is also the captain of KKR, a franchise which Gambhir is head coach of, and have clearly seen and known the capabilities and skills Iyer possess.
India's batting middle order does need consistency, which had been a weak link in previous World Cups. Iyer's calm temperament and ability to rotate the strike while finding boundaries make him a perfect fit for the number four or five position.
