Also Iyer is also the captain of KKR, a franchise which Gambhir is head coach of, and have clearly seen and known the capabilities and skills Iyer possess.

India's batting middle order does need consistency, which had been a weak link in previous World Cups. Iyer's calm temperament and ability to rotate the strike while finding boundaries make him a perfect fit for the number four or five position.
