Amazing write up!
We recently had the opportunity to showcase work by Gaia Adducchio. This is what she had to say about her practice:
My approach to photography has always been one of researching. As much as I'm passionate about the photographic medium and its artisan aspect, I can concentrate on it, especially when responding to creative needs. This allowed me to gain through time both analogue and digital skills.
I like to think of my pieces of work as material individuals and, in every project, I need a physical phase during which I need to "touch" the corporality of what I'm doing.
This work, "Naked: 9 she" arises from the acute awareness of everyone's mortality, in an attempt to exorcise a thought from which it is difficult to free oneself. My goal as an author is to make tangible, materialize an unconscious, almost dreamlike perception of reality.
Among the means of expression, photography is the one that most strongly experiences the contradiction of an absolute coexistence between the overcoming of death and its attestation, thus becoming its emblem.
The project was born to investigate this contradiction. I liked to explore, with an aesthetic that refers to a memory of death, the body as an agent of life and therefore also of eroticism. The subjects, exclusively female, without their clothes, always wear masks that preserve their identity and emphasize their archetypal function. During the photo sessions, they play with the idea of sensuality, pornography, grace, femininity, motherhood, and often subvert its limits and definitions.
