The million dollar question will Messi win his seventh Ballon d’Or today or will Lewandowski snatch it away from him. There have been extensive debates over the past year as to who deserves to win the Ballon d’Or and it comes down to people: Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich or the man, the myth, the legend himself, Leo Messi.
Lewandowski will still be recovering from the snub he faced last year where he was pinned down to win the Ballon d’Or but L’Equipe and France Football decided not to give the award out last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. And a lot of people have said that he deserves it because he didn’t get it last year in which he was the best player by a country mile.
Messi fans will argue that he single-handedly won Argentina the Copa America earlier this year, which is why he deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
If stats are anything to go by, Lewandowski clearly has the upper hand over Messi. Lewandowski has 64 goals and 10 assists in 53 games, whereas Messi has 41 goals and 14 assists in 54 games. But what separates Messi from Lewandowski is how Messi played such a pivotal role in the Copa America and helped them win it as well, but Lewandowski fans will argue that he has clearly had a better domestic season.
Messi or Lewandowski, we don’t know yet, but whoever wins surely deserves to win with both being in fantastic form over the past year.
