When Arsenal missed out on Mykhailo Mudryk in January after Chelsea had stolen the deal, hopes for a positive window were low among the Arsenal fanbase. Arsenal had made clear in the past they usually pushed hard for their first option and didn't think too far past that.
However, just a few days after, reports emerged that the Gunners were lining up a move for Belgian international Leandro Trossard. The winger had fallen out with Brighton Manager Roberto De Zerbi and was available at a good price. After a day of negotiations, Trossard was on his way to the Emirates.
Excitement was high over the new signing but some reservations remained. Would Trossard be able to fit into Mikel Arteta's team? There were questions marks over the Belgian's consistency and attitude, given the way his Brighton exit had transpired.
However, almost three months on from Trossard's arrival all of those concerns have firmly been put to bed. Trossard has been voted Arsenal's player of the month for March and is creating a real selection dilemma as Gabriel Jesus has returned.
Trossard has supplied an incredible seven assists in just 11 Premier League appearances since arriving, as well as scoring a goal. Even more impressively, those contributions have come from three different positions.
Trossard initially competed for Gabriel Martinelli's spot on the left wing, Trossard scored against Brentford. However, once Eddie Nketiah picked up an injury, Trossard moved into the middle of the pitch and showed his astute technical ability and positioning. In his five games in that position, he supplied six assists. With Bukayo Saka's absence from the starting lineup against Leeds, Trossard moved to the right and picked up yet another assist.
Trossard has supplied simply the perfect boost to this Arsenal team during such a crucial moment of the season. Now Arteta faces another decision before Arsenal's crucial trip to Anfield. To start the incredible Trossard, or return to a newly revitalised Jesus, who scored a brace against Leeds.
One thing is clear, Arteta and Edu deserve massive credit for signing Trossard in January and the Belgian has made himself a quick fan's favourite.
