After adopting a gluten-free and dairy-free diet, he’s responding well to the change. Most of his issues are resolved.
The Case of a Family Intolerance;
Mrs s. came in nine years ago; she was fifty-six years old then and an active golfer. she wanted to lose weight. she had some pain issues and occasional acidity.
Presenting Symptoms;
• Knee and lower back pain
• Fatigue, irritability, hair fall, brittle nails
• occasional acid reflux
On screening, her Crp and anti-gliadin levels were high. but what was much more interesting was that she turned out to be a case of full-blown celiac disease, though atypical, with most of her symptoms outside the gut. she naturally had to go off gluten for life— but because she was celiac-positive, her grandchildren, who were plump and lethargic, also came in for testing. On screening, both turned out to be intolerant to gluten and one was celiac-positive. her son also was gluten-intolerant. The whole family is now responding well to a gluten-free diet. This is a case where because of one person in the family, the food triggers for the entire family were discovered. The learning is clear that screening of first-degree relatives is essential, regardless of symptoms.
A Case of Celiac-Caused Palsy;
Ms K., aged thirty-two, was just shy of being obese (87 kg at five feet five). she had a range of skin issues including psoriasis and facial paralysis called bell’s palsy. she was on medicines for hypertension and on anti-anxiety pills, which made her sleep a lot. she wasn’t able to lose weight. both her parents were diabetic; her father had died of lung cancer and her mother suffered from depression.
Presenting Symptoms;
• psoriasis
• bell’s palsy
• hypertension since the age of twenty-four
Investigation showed several deficiencies (low vitamin d and b12), critically high uric acid, elevated thyroid antibodies and an abnormal lipid profile. The anti-gliadin antibodies were also high and scanning showed inflammation in the small intestine, so I suggested a biopsy, which was clear.
