He went back to eating wheat and the pigmentation soon vanished. his dermatologist dismissed the diet connection, so he stopped coming.
The Case of the Autistic Child
A nine-year-old boy came in, having been diagnosed with autism and adhd. he was already on medication for the disorders, prescribed by his physician (a paediatric psychiatrist). autistic kids often harm themselves; this boy would bang his head against a wall for hours, twice a day at least. he had bleeding wounds on the head from the injuries.
Presenting Symptoms;
Uncontrollable stomach ache and nausea, as well as the head-banging. His celiac markers were negative. The anti-gliadin antibody test was positive (NCWs) and the food intolerance test also showed milk intolerance. Dairy was removed from his diet and grains modified to eliminate inflammatory ones, such as wheat and cross-sensitive grains. Gut-building foods, including virgin coconut oil and vitamin and mineral supplements, were added. Within a week, the head-banging reduced to half the duration. In a few weeks, it stopped. The connection between diet and symptoms was so obvious that when he ate a regular chocolate muffin given inadvertently by a teacher in school, there was a resurgence of the behaviour, which then took months to resolve. We have been following up with him now for over three years; his issues are generally resolved. We keep him on a no-sugar, no-dairy and gluten-free grain diet. He’s getting supportive therapy, but much less. Even his doctor has been focusing on gut health to keep him fully functional in all respects.
