But it was her celiac marker (first at 144 and then 226 in a repeat test, when normal is under 20) that showed she had full-blown celiac disease. she responded very well to the complete elimination of gluten from her diet, lost 10 kg in six months and resolved most other issues, including the anxiety.
The Case of the Returning Dermatitis;
a super-fit forty-year-old lady came in with some skin issues and very minor digestive ones. she was five feet six and weighed 48 kg, with a bMI of 19. The sister of a homoeopath, she’d consulted many doctors over the last three to four years for the black patches on her neck. Medically, she was only on a few vitamin supplements.
Presenting Symptoms;
• seborrheic dermatitis since 2016, with itchiness and patches on the neck and white flakes on the eyelashes
• acidity for six to seven years
Her bloodwork showed a magnesium, vitamin d and vitamin b12 deficiency. Two months into a modification of her diet and elimination of inflammatory grains, her skin issues were completely resolved. however, she returned after a year to report that the patches were coming back—this, while she was strictly gluten-free. That seemed odd, as she had immediately responded well to a gluten-free diet, so I did a little detective work. I asked her what atta she was consuming. We discovered that though the atta was indeed gluten- free, it was a different variety, though from the same brand that she had been using. This one contained soya, which had caused a cross-reaction. she changed to one without both gluten and soya and was sorted. The power of dietary change was obvious. The issue of cross-reactivity was once again reinforced.
The Boy Who Never Went to School;
This thirteen-year-old child had never really gone to school; his attention-deficit disorder was so severe that he simply couldn’t sit in class. he was also obese, at 102 kg, and just over five feet seven. bespectacled, lazy and passive, he had zero motivation to make any changes to his lifestyle.
